About Power4.Africa
Power4.Africa is a free, public, real-time map of power outages in Kenya, starting with the Nairobi metro area. It exists so that anyone can answer one question fast: is the power out just for me, or for my whole area, and when is it coming back?
Where the data comes from
Planned interruptions are ingested automatically every day from Kenya Power's published maintenance notices, and are labelled 'Planned interruption per Kenya Power notice' on the map.
Unplanned outages come from anonymous community reports, labelled 'Community reports' with the number of independent reports shown. Crowd reports are never presented as verified Kenya Power information.
How verification works
- A single report shows as 'Investigating' with low confidence.
- Two or more independent reports within about 1.5 km and 45 minutes merge into one 'Active' outage; confidence grows with each report.
- An outage resolves when two or more people report power back, or automatically after 4 hours without new reports.
Privacy
Reporting is anonymous. We store no names, phone numbers, or accounts; an anonymised device fingerprint (a one-way hash) is kept briefly for spam control. Kenya Data Protection Act 2019 applies.
